Imagine going snowboarding with your best friend, and suddenly one trip changes your whole life. In 1991, Richard Woolcott and Tucker Hall took their regular trip to Tahoe, California, for the umpteenth time but had to extend it due to the weather. This moment was pivotal. The daily experience of new and fresh powder got under their skin so much that Woolcott decided to quit his job and came up with the idea of starting a company with Hall that would revolve around their favorite sports - snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing. They raised money, came up with a name, and Volcom was ready to take on the world.
Just for context, at the time Volcom was starting out, snowboarding and skateboarding were looked down upon, and the US was in a recession, so those were not the best conditions for founding a brand that loved board sports. In the beginning, the Volcom brand was very casual, and the guys didn't take the business very seriously. They traveled a lot and did their favorite sports as much as they could. The business was dealt with minimally. The headquarters were in Richard's bedroom, and Sales were handled at Tucker's house, and neither of them knew much about how clothes were made. However, their zest for work, love for sports, and creativity were enough.
Much has changed since then. The Volcom brand has now been around for 30 years. It has stores all over the world, sponsors many athletes, and it has become the main partner dressing the US snowboard team at the Beijing Olympics in 2022. Volcom connects art, music, movies, athletes through clothing, and you can now join this community.
