New Balance 204L
The brand New Balance was founded in 1906 in Boston, and grey is as integral to it as the letter N on the side. That's why you'll recognize its signature at first glance in the grey sneakers New Balance 204L. The model 204L features a low, slim profile inspired by archival running shoes. You’ll reach for them when you want to lighten up your outfit and give it a retro touch without unnecessary bulk.
The upper is made of suede, which feels soft and adapts nicely to your foot over time. The rubber outsole keeps you stable on sidewalks and cobblestones in the city, and the standard D width fits most feet. The low cut leaves your ankle free, so you can pair the grey New Balance sneakers with straight jeans, wide trousers, or shorts with socks pulled above the ankle. Laces are included in the package. New Balance still prides itself on craftsmanship, with a portion of production still made in the USA and the UK, which is rare among sports brands.
New Balance 204L
The sneaker that made waves on the runway thanks to AURALEE and ambassador Rosalía - New Balance 204L
Not every new silhouette hits the fashion scene before you even see it in stores – New Balance 204L did just that. It first appeared on the AURALEE runway, instantly earning it the status of a fashion exhibit, and shortly after, it was taken on by singer Rosalía as the face of the campaign. The sneaker was designed as a thoughtful bridge between two design eras – the athletic minimalism of the '70s and the technical style of the early 2000s. The result is a sleek, low-profile silhouette that manages to be both retro and contemporary.
History: a bridge between the '70s and the 2000s
The model debuted in July 2025, globally releasing on July 30 for $110. New Balance designers drew from archival models as well as more modern lifestyle favorites during its creation – the overall structure references the aesthetic of the '70s, specifically the archival model New Balance 321, while the 204L also quotes two popular models from the early 2000s, 740 and 530. The resulting outsole combines a "strike path" pattern typical of the 2000s with a tread inspired by the '70s. Shortly after its release, the sneaker also gained an exclusive version in collaboration with Kith, which sold out quickly, confirming the strong commercial appeal of the silhouette.
Technology: FuelCell or EVA depending on the version, ENCAP frame
The 204L is produced in two technical variations, depending on the specific collection:
- FuelCell midsole (selected versions): Foam with the highest energy return in New Balance labs, complemented by a bio-based ENCAP frame strategically placed in the heel to prevent the ride from being too soft.
- EVA midsole with ENCAP frame (base version): A firmer foam core wrapped in a polyurethane frame, complemented by a durable rubber outsole with a hybrid "heritage" tread.
Design
The slim profile of the midsole, measuring just 104 mm at the toe, places the 204L among the narrower silhouettes on the market, alongside models like the adidas Stan Smith or Handball Spezial – the lightweight construction and flexible EVA core offer solid, though not overly soft, cushioning.
Who the model is for
The 204L is a fashion silhouette for you if you're looking for a slim, minimalist sneaker with a current fashion status – perfect for everyday wear with a touch of "quiet luxury" style, less suitable as performance running footwear.

More than a century of tradition based on stable and reliable movement. These are the New Balance shoes, which have become a symbol around which a cult of comfortable walking and running lovers has been created during the 20th century. But beyond sneakers, New Balance is also at the forefront of everyday and sports fashion. Every year, a special collection is released and more than one football team boasts the NB logo on their jersey.
The history and development of New Balance shoes
On our website and practically anywhere else, you won't find a large number of brands as old as New Balance. In fact, as early as 1906, the New Balance Arch Support Company was formed to provide specific aids for each shoe. These were designed to not only provide comfort to the then not-so-comfortable shoes, but more importantly stability by supporting the arch of the foot - hence the name New Balance.
However, New Balance sneakers as shoes did not start to come out until many years later. Specifically, the first silhouette of a New Balance shoe saw the light of day in 1960 when the Trackster model came out. It was unique among the others primarily because it was the first outright running shoe with a crimped sole.
But the marketing didn't work very well and for a long time New Balance shoes were still a community affair. It wasn't until the 1970s that sales started to grow, with the popularisation of running, which was also linked to the hosting of the now iconic Boston Marathon. New Balance shoes began to become popular among runners and the company slowly but surely became a leading manufacturer of running shoes.
For running? Yes, but also no.
Today, however, men's and women's New Balance sneakers aren't just a running thing. Over years of branding and image building, they have become sneakers for almost every situation. Today we wear New Balance shoes before a trip to the countryside, a city walk but also a social event and still undoubtedly before a sporting performance.
New Balance sneakers can therefore be found in a variety of different designs. Men's and women's, in black and white and many other colours. The most popular models today are mainly New Balance sneakers with the 247, 373, 574 and 997. Of course, you can find all these New Balance shoes on Footshop. But besides these, there are also many others and the ranges of the latest silhouettes are constantly growing. So before you make your final choice, carefully examine all of our New Balance sneakers.
A record for stability.
New Balance footwear today is not afraid to venture into collaborations with other fashion brands, but also artists or athletes. It's not so long ago that the NB logo also started to appear on the jerseys of some football teams, and it's not impossible that the brand's influence and reach will continue to grow in the future. New Balance sneakers are worn, for example, by Trayvon Bromell, the American sprinter who became the first junior ever to break the magic ten-second mark in the 100 metres. Could it be that New Balance shoes helped him to achieve this?
In short,New Balance sneakers are a phenomenon that we have been wearing for many decades and everything indicates that we will be wearing them for many decades to come. And hopefully in greater numbers. The original intention of the brand, to make wearing sneakers on a daily basis more enjoyable, has not left New Balance shoes even more than a century after the legendary phrase was introduced to the market.
So be part of a tradition with a clear vision and name your sneakers with the iconic NB in the logo.
