Birkenstock Madrid Big Buckle
How about the Birkenstock Madrid Big Buckle, a pair of women's sandals that you can wear out in the city or for coffee with a friend without looking like you're heading to the pool? The simple silhouette with a wide strap features a bold metal buckle that elevates the model from a comfortable classic to a fashion statement. The brown patent leather catches the light with every step, making even a basic pair of jeans and a white t-shirt look more put-together.
The leather upper maintains its shape, while the glossy finish adds an elegant touch to the sandals. Underfoot, you'll find a natural cork midsole that gradually molds to the shape of your foot over time. The lightweight EVA outsole provides pleasant cushioning and absorbs impact on hard surfaces. The narrower width of the insole is ideal for slimmer feet, which tend to slip in classic styles. You can adjust the strap with the large buckle to ensure a secure fit without any pressure points. Pair them with linen trousers, a midi skirt, or flowy dresses, where the shine of the leather really stands out. Birkenstock is a German brand with a shoemaking tradition dating back to the 18th century, known primarily for its anatomically shaped cork footbed. The Madrid model is one of the oldest in its lineup.

Japanese Minimalism on Your Feet: Birkenstock Kyoto
For the first time in over thirty years, Birkenstock named a new model after a Japanese city – and it wasn't by chance. Birkenstock Kyoto carries the name of Japan's cultural and historical heart, perfectly aligning with its character: seamlessly blending the old with the new, an athletic look with the traditional comfort of Birkenstock. The silhouette quickly became a favorite choice for those seeking something bolder than the classic Arizona straps, while still not sacrificing comfort. The model has also appeared in limited and designer collaborations, further solidifying its status.
History: First Japanese Name in 34 Years
Kyoto was introduced by Birkenstock in 2020 – it was the first model to bear the name of a Japanese city in approximately 34 years. The name perfectly captured the character of the silhouette, which combines athletic design with a suede upper into one smooth line suitable for everyday wear without losing comfort. Kyoto later saw a premium limited edition Kyoto Tradition made from fine deer leather, released in September 2024 to celebrate the brand's 250th anniversary, as well as a collaboration with streetwear brand Concepts.
Technology: Contoured Insole and Double Velcro Straps
What makes Kyoto comfortable despite its bolder, more athletic shape are these features:
- Contoured Cork-Latex Insole: Gradually adapts to the shape of your foot and offers customized support the longer you wear it.
- Deep Heel Cup: Supports the foot's tissue and keeps the heel bone firmly in its natural position.
- Side Arch Support: Wraps around the midfoot bones and provides stability with every step.
- Raised Toe Pockets: Allow your toes to remain comfortably spread in their natural position instead of being cramped.
- Double Velcro Straps: Allow you to adjust the width of the sandal both inside and outside for a precise fit on your foot.
- EVA Outsole: Lightweight and flexible, ideal for wearing on the go and throughout the day.
Design
The suede or nubuck upper secured with Velcro gives Kyoto a distinctly sportier silhouette than the classic Arizona straps – the combination of textures between the upper and strap adds visual depth that you'll appreciate upon closer inspection.
Who This Model Is For
Kyoto is a fashion silhouette for you if you're looking for a bolder, more athletic sandal with real arch support – perfect for traveling and everyday wear where you want a combination of striking design with the comfort that Birkenstocks are known for.
Materials
Are you a fan of tried-and-tested silhouettes and perfect workmanship? Then keep an eye out, because few brands on Footshop date their roots back to the 18th century. For almost 200 years, Germany's Birkenstock was an orthopaedic shoe brand, but it wasn't until the 1960s that it became a global phenomenon, when American Margot Fraiser became so enamored with the comfort of these shoes that she decided to expand production to include San Francisco. The open toed shoe with a cork sole quickly became highly sought after and success was not long in coming. Give in to the benefits of slippers and sandals and treat your feet to a piece from our range!
